Ashburn, GA

Ashburn, GA is in Turner County located about 80 miles south of Macon. Turner County is part of territory acquired in the Indian treaties of 1814 and 1818. In 1888, the Southern Railroad came through and in 1899 one of the largest sawmills in the South began operation in the area. The new county of Turner was created in 1905, with Ashburn as the county seat. Originally called Marion, the city was later renamed for W.W. Ashburn, a major landholder. Dairy production led to the establishment of the Ashburn Creamery, and as a leader in tobacco production, the city was once the site of a giant tobacco warehouse. Following the economic depression of the 1930's peanuts became a major crop in Turner County.
